Technology for Social Justice:

Engineering Methods to Reduce Poverty, Racism, and Inequities

SP17

Within the study of engineering, societal problems are only unlocked when the best ideas find the solution. This is why a diversity of thoughts, backgrounds, and cultures are so key to science exploration.

In order to encourage and expand this important reality, Ohio State Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Kevin Passino and fellow faculty created Technology for Social Justice. It is a gathering of people working on technology and engineering, trying to find solutions related to antipoverty, antiracist, and inequity applications.

"Technology has a significant impact on human development, including standard of living, health, and education," Passino said. "The focus here is on advancing technologies for marginalized individuals that can help alleviate poverty, racism, and inequities."

The workshop technical program takes place Saturday, April 9 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The day includes speakers, activities, and a full schedule of events: https://ece.osu.edu/technology-social-justice

Discussions throughout the day include guests from other universities as well as administrative voices from throughout Ohio State. Topics range anywhere from mental health, technologies, police training, education, analytics, and student discussion groups.

"We hope to learn from each other, establish new collaborations, and advance the field of Technology for Social Justice," Passino said.

All are welcome to attend, but registration in advance is kindly requested – there are no fees:
