An electrical and computer engineering (ECE) doctoral candidate at The Ohio State University recently won the Robinson Presidential Fellowship for his work in ultra-violet (UV) light technology.

Scholarship winner, Yuewei Zhang, studies under the guidance of ECE Associate Professor Siddharth Rajan. He is scheduled to receive his Ph.D. summer 2018.

Zhang earned the best paper award at the recent International Symposium on Semiconductor Light Emitting Devices (ISSLED 2017) conference in Banff, Canada, for his research proposal, “Reflective metal/semiconductor tunnel junctions for hole injection in AlGaN UV LEDs.”

His work outlines a way toward producing a high-powered UV bulb without the danger of releasing mercury; like other UV lamps are known to do.

The Robinson Presidential Fellowship recognizes an outstanding student in the College of Engineering, plus provides recipients with the opportunity to devote full time to their dissertation research by taking up their school costs. The award includes a taxable monthly stipend, tuition payments, and travel allowance for presentations of dissertation research at professional meetings and conferences.

The fellowship is regarded as one of the most competitive and prestigious scholarly recognitions provided by the Graduate School of Ohio State.
