Five undergraduate students have received $2,000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Scholarships for $2,000 each.

They were presented the awards by Professor Betty Lise Anderson. The students are Matthew Wolfe (left), Benjamin McCray (center left), Robert Lackowski (center right), and David Wilson (right) and Jordan Jurgensmier (not pictured).

These competitive scholarships are for students meeting GPA requirements, working toward a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and who are willing to take courses in power andenergy engineering.

The scholarship awarded by the Ohio State IEEE PES education committee to encourage  undergraduate students to study power and energy systems.

Students are selected based on their applications and their interests in power systems and distributed to US residents. Power systems faculty participated in selections.

TheIEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative provides multi-yearscholarships and career experience opportunities to qualifying U.S. electrical engineering undergraduate students.

As long as the scholar continues to meet renewal standards, he or she will receive up to three years of funding interspersed with up to two years of valuable, hands-on career experience. More than 115 companies have hired a PES Scholar for an internship and/or a full time position.

“There’s a lot of energy behind the PES initiative and it’s gratifying to see new talent connecting with employers – it’sfun to know you’re making a difference in a big way. And I know we have,” said Wanda Reder, Co-Chair of the scholarship. “In recentyears, with the emergence of smart grid and renewables, it’s a different game that is attracting a younger demographic. A recent survey showed that thenumber of graduates pursuing power engineering is up about a third since 2006. So that’s progress.”
