Ohio State ECE co-sponsoring WiPDA Workshop on Wide Bandgap Power Devices and Applications

More than 100 researchers, circuit designers and application engineers will meet at The Ohio State University at the end of October for the first-ever IEEE Workshop on Wide Bandgap Power Devices and Applications.

The workshop will provide a forum for members of the Electron Device Society and Power Electronics Society to share technology updates, research findings, development experience and potential applications. The event is co-sponsored by Ohio State's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The event is scheduled for October 27 to 29 at the Blackwell Hotel and Conference Center on the Ohio State campus. Registration is currently open.

WiPDA will include informational and technical sessions on a variety of topics, along with four short courses offered by experts from CREE, EPC, Infineon and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It is sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power Electronics Society.

Highlights of the workshop will include two keynote sessions on the mornings of Oct. 28 and 29, featuring leading experts from academia, industry and research institutes. The keynote speakers will share their insights into technology developments and future trends. A panel discussion on the afternoon of Oct. 29 will feature experts and program managers from Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Department of Energy, Office of Naval Research, and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Lecture topics will include:

  • Heteroepitaxial and bulk growth
  • Dielectrics and passivation
  • Device structure and fabrication techniques
  • Device evaluation and modeling
  • Normally-off device designs 
  • SOAs, including short-circuit, spike and transient tolerance
  • Harsh environment (high temperature) operation and reliability
  • Very-high efficiency or compact converters
  • Hard-switched and resonant switch applications
  • Gate drive and other auxiliary circuits
  • Power modules and ICs
  • High-performance passive components
  • Integration with renewable energy resources
  • Application in vehicle electrification

The event also will include four short-course tutorials:

  • Vehicle Applications of WBG Devices, led by Madhu Chinthavali of Oak Ridge National Laboratory
  • SiC Power Devices: Status and Outlook, led by Peter Friedrichs of Infineon Technologies AG.
  • SiC Power Devices: Current State of the Technology and Future Perspectives, led by Brett Hull of CREE Inc.
  • Enhancement Mode GaN on Silicon Enables Increased Performance and New Applications, led by David Reusch
