Professor John Volakis
John Volakis, Chope Chair professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the ElectroScience Laboratory, was recently profiled in IEEE’s The Institute online member newsletter.

The article profiles Volakis’ journey from growing up as a farmer’s son in a remote village on the Greek island of Chios to his current role at The Ohio State University. It also discusses Volakis and his research team’s development of a process to embroider electrically conductive fibers into fabric to create antennas.

“Radio waves already give you the ability to transfer large amounts of data, including pictures, in real time,” says Volakis. “Embedding antennas into clothes provides a new way to sense the body’s functions and send data to medical professionals without active participation from the patient or anyone noticing the presence of these electronics.”
