Ozguner and Redmill publish 'Autonomous Ground Vehicles'

Ümit Özgüner, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Keith Redmill, assistant professor of practice, have written the new textbook, Autonomous Ground Vehicles, along with Tankut Acarman from Galatasaray University.

In the near future, we will witness vehicles with the ability to provide drivers with several advanced safety and performance assistance features. Autonomous technology in ground vehicles will provide capabilities like intersection collision warning, lane change warning, backup parking, parallel parking aids, and bus precision parking. Providing you with a practical understanding of this technology area, this innovative resource focuses on basic autonomous control and feedback for stopping and steering ground vehicles.

Covering sensors, estimation, and sensor fusion to percept the vehicle motion and surrounding objects, this unique book explains the key aspects that makes autonomous vehicle behavior possible. Moreover, you find detailed examples of fusion and Kalman filtering. From maps, path planning, and obstacle avoidance cooperative mobility among autonomous vehicles, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, this forward-looking book presents the most critical topics in the field today. Autonomous Ground Vehicles was published by Artech House Books in July 2011.

Özgüner holds the TRC Inc. Chair on Intelligent Transportation Systems. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He conducts research in the areas of intelligent control of large, decentralized systems, automotive control, intelligent vehicle highway systems, vibration damping in flexible structures. In addition to his teaching and research, Özgüner has led Ohio State teams which participated in the Multi Autonomous Ground Robotic International Competition, DARPA Urban Challenge and DARPA Grand Challenge.

Redmill’s research activities include control theory, sensing and sensor fusion, wireless communication, intelligent transportation systems, and autonomous ground and air vehicles. He has also greatly contributed to teams participating in the Multi Autonomous Ground Robotic International Competition, DARPA Urban Challenge and DARPA Grand Challenge. He is a member of SIAM and a senior member of IEEE.
