Prof. Berger’s team wins Ohio State’s Business Plan Competition
Paul Berger, professor of electrical and computer engineering, is chief technology officer of Genanosys, the winning team of the 2011 Ohio State University Business Plan Competition hosted by Fisher College of Business.
Genanosys is a semiconductor technology company. Team members include: Paul Dymerski, interim CEO and COO; Paul Berger, chief technology officer and Ohio State technology inventor; Daniel Casey, CFO, Bryan McElwain, marketing manager and Fisher MBA student; Kangsub Song, global account manager and Fisher MBA student; and Ravi Patel, finance manager and Fisher MBA student; and Andrew Stock, an Ohio State undergrad in computer science and engineering. Anisha Ramesh, an electrical and computer engineering PhD student who is beginning her final year at OSU with Prof. Berger under the prestigious OSU Presidential Fellowship, served as a key technology advisor.
Genanoys’ patented, platform technology provides a breakthrough solution to the problem that is known as the “power wall” in the semiconductor industry. This power wall limits the further advancement of integrated circuits (ICs) in two major areas: power consumption and resultant heat production. This limitation is fast approaching and the continued improvements that attract customers and sales will no longer be possible. Genanosys designs and prototypes integrated circuits which, when incorporating baseline technology, will be over 50 percent more power efficient than current competitors and will produce 75 percent less heat than existing technologies. This technology is an outcome of Berger’s continual research spanning over more than a decade for which the IEEE elevated him to Fellow status earlier this year. More recently, Berger's work on quantum tunneling devices is spearheaded by Ramesh.
The second place winner in the competition was New Dimensions and third-place was captured by the HOIA Health. FinDestiny, a web-based financial planning and advising application, was the winner of the undergraduate track of the competition. Second and third place winners for the undergraduate track were Social Signature and Columbus Promos.
The Ohio State University Business Plan Competition encourages entrepreneurially-oriented Ohio State students to develop and grow new ventures based on their own ideas and technologies; provides students with opportunities to develop their ideas and pitch their ventures to investors; and shares constructive feedback for increasing the probability of successfully launching their ventures.
