The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program

The PhD degree is offered by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Program in all areas of specialization. The Graduate School Handbook provides details of the degree requirements as defined by the Graduate School for all doctoral programs. Here, we will outline the specific requirements established by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Program.

The ECE department offers several tracks to pursue a PhD degree:

  • Enter PhD program after completing BS degree.
  • Transfer from master's program to PhD program.
  • Enter PhD program after completing the MS degree.

PhD degree requirements can be found here.

Acceptance into the Doctoral Program

Students who have earned a BS degree, students who are currently pursuing a master's degree or students who have earned a master's degree may apply for PhD graduate studies in the ECE department.

Direct PhD from BS

The students with the most promising dossier will be directly admitted to the PhD program by the admission committee.   The direct admission criteria will be similar to the criteria used for the University Fellowship competition.

Transfer from MS program to Direct PhD program

Students admitted to the MS program in the ECE department can submit an application to the direct PhD program during the course of their MS studies and before the completion of their MS exam if they have the support of their advisor and have demonstrated promising evidence of scholarship. Students seeking admission to the direct PhD program are required to submit an ECE department PhD application to the ECE Graduate Admission Committee.

The application includes:

  1. ECE Application to Continue for PhD Form
  2. Student Advising Report
  3. Two ECE PhD Recommendation Forms from ECE faculty; one recommendation is from the ECE faculty who has agreed to advise the applicant's PhD studies.

OSU PhD from OSU MS

Students completing the MS degree at The Ohio State University and wishing to continue for the PhD degree are required to submit an ECE department PhD application to the ECE Graduate Admissions Committee.

The application includes:

  1. ECE Application to Continue for PhD Form
  2. Student Advising Report
  3. Two ECE PhD Recommendation Forms from ECE faculty; one recommendation is from the ECE faculty who has agreed to advise the applicant's PhD studies.

OSU PhD from non-OSU MS

Students who have completed an MS degree outside The Ohio State University follow standard university admissions procedures. Evidence of independent research ability is critical for admission to the doctoral program.
