ELMS - MSDNAA Download Documentation
When downloading software from the ELMS for MSDNAA web site, to insure the successful expansion of application files to burn to a cd, you should be in one of the ECE Windows labs, either CL260 or DL517. It should work from the dorms and from home with a high speed line connection but we can not guarantee the transfer via those methods.
First browse to the ELMS website at: http://msdn05.e-academy.com/ohio-state_ee/ and log in using your ELMS username and password.
Click on the Software button and you have a choice of downloading any of the applications under the "Search by product titles" drop down list.
The ELMS site is similar to an online store where you can place items into your cart and then checkout all of the items at once. Begin by selecting which product you wish to download and click Go. You may place several items in your "Cart" but this is not recommended as the Temp partition on the Windows workstations in the ECE labs is limited to 800MB.
Once you've selected your application and placed it in your "Cart", choose "Check out". It is at this point that you must enter your First and Last names, and you should see that your email address is also listed as your Electrical & Computer Engineering address. If you wish to have any information concerning this application download emailed to a different address, enter it at this point. Click on Next.
You have a chance to review your selection and the email address location for this selection. If all of that is acceptable, move your cursor over the application name listed and click once on it.
If an intallation product code is necessary for your selected application it will be displayed on this page. Please make a note of it. You will be sent an email regarding the application you have downloaded and the corresponding product code. To continue the download, click on Download Software.
This brings up a standard File Download window where you can choose the path to the location to save the "downloader" executable file. This file is what is executed to download and expand the appliction files for the selected application. Save the "downloader" executable in the Temp partition of the local workstation you're currently logged in to.
Interaction with the ELMS web site is complete at this stage.
Use Windows Explorer to browse to the Temp partition and execute the "downloader" executable. It will be named similar to the application name you have chosen.
The first step in this next process is to choose where you want to expand the application files. By default, the window displays "C:\Temp". DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PATH !!!!!
Change the path to a folder of your choosing on the Temp partition of the local workstation you're currently logged in to. That drive letter will either be D or E, depending on the type of workstation you're currently working on.
There are four steps to this process, two of which are complete at this stage: Authorization and Downloading. Once the progress bar is completed to 100% for downloading, the Unpacking stage begins.
The "Unpacked Directory" path during the "Unpacking" stage will be listed as "C:\Temp" incorrectly. Don't worry, this is incorrect and it really is unpacking to the path that you entered in the "Downloading" stage.
The last stage of this process is "Launch Install". DO NOT DO THIS ON A LAB MACHINE! Attempting to launch install will result in errors.
The files you need are located in the path you specified in the "Downloading" stage. Exit the window and simply browse to this path and you can view those files and burn them to a cd. Some applications download a file in ISO format. You can either use Roxio Easy CDCreator on the Dell 530 workstations or the HPxw4100 Workstations to expand from that ISO image or if you're on one of the HPx4000 Workstations, you can burn that ISO image straight to a cd. Unfortunately, the HPx4000 Workstations only have HP RecordNow installed on them and that does not have the capability to expand ISO images to a cd. You do not need the "downloader" executable file once you have downloaded either the ISO image or the expanded application files.
Some of the applications you will download require activation for the product to be capable of running beyond a given time period, be it 30, 60 or 90 days. When you activate a product it becomes valid for that installation only.
